CoolJapanese scientists have developed a new kind of microscopy that lets scientists observe life unfolding inside cells. It's called bidirectional quantitative scattering microscopy (paper here). This lets you see the traffic in a live cell and gain insights into cell biological functioning.

Testimony from a surviving Maduro guard on what happened on the night of the raid. Sounds straight out of some science fiction story, if his account is accurate.
Without a doubt. I'm sending a warning to anyone who thinks they can fight the United States. They have no idea what they're capable of. After what I saw, I never want to be on the other side of that again. They're not to be messed with.
Looks like gave 5 stars on the mobile app. Looks like the U.S. really has a Department of War.

By playing around with the molecular structure of LSD, some scientists found a potent analog to treat depression without the hallucinogenic potential. It's called JRT, and since it's unusual to have the letter J in a scientific name, I clicked to see what it stood for. It stands for the initials of the lead author. He named this agent after himself. 🙄 That's different.

Today is the day Aaron Swartz died in 2013. One of the things he invented was the Markup Language. And this article from last year appeared today on Hacker News. Of course, people are opinionated about this, and the author took umbrage at criticism directed against the article. Markdown is not perfect, but there is a place for it. and we need some kind of simple formatting to achieve a WYSIWYG look. I edit in CotEditor and view the result in Marked 2. I don't think Markdown is a "disaster" but it's there, and you can use it if you like, or leave it alone.

It's so amusing when media publishes articles like this: The NIH has lost its scientific integrity. So we left. The authors are upset because RFK Jr is having the vaccine schedule reviewed and updated, and apparently they don't like that this happened at all. You never saw articles like this when Biden was president and they kept pushing the COVID mRNA vax product. Or when the Dems were so much in favor of sex-reassignment surgery on teens. Yes, somehow reviewing the vaccine schedule is scientific dis-integrity? This just reveals how partisan they are.
And speaking of the Lefty intolerance, I lost respect for Daring Fireball after he posted this article, calling Sundar Pichai and Tim Cook cowards for not censoring Grok. The Right says, "If you don't like it, don't use it." The Left says "I don't like it, so you can't have it." There are far, far worse things that society has had to put up with during the last administration than just an app that puts a bikini on people.

This is the hard reality of the downside of biometric security. We saw this in Dan Brown's book Angels and Demons, too.

There's been social media buzz that maybe high cholesterol levels are actually better for you. This article debunks that. And I love this quote:
“We must admit that our opponents in this argument have a marked advantage over us. They need only a few words to set forth a half-truth; whereas, in order to show that it is a half-truth, we have to resort to long and arid dissertations.”

― Frédéric Bastiat
So true.

I saw this article: How rethinking your relationship with time could give you more of it, but this statement caught my eye:
One study showed that people would rather spend 15 minutes getting electric shocks than 15 minutes of time with their own thoughts – particularly men: 67 per cent of men preferred the electric shock, compared with 25 per cent of women.
I can relate to this.

Do you feel this way?  Using AI is no longer optional. It's beginning to feel that way.

Yet another article touting the value of creatine supplements. Increasing levels of creatine should help in theory but I never notice any difference. Like I don't get that post-exercise mood elevation people talk about.

It's simple (in theory). How to get stronger – keep exercising until your muscles ache, and always be working on trying to make them ache.

The Economist write about falling fentanyl overdose deaths.  But do they credit the current administration? Nope. They do admit that peak purity of fentanyl powder occurred in July 2023 (while Biden was in power) but what they credit now is that somehow there is "shrinkflation" keeping drug overdoses low. What effort could have resulted in that? Could it be "something changing in China"? Hmmm. They are at a loss to say.
