UC Berkeley math community left at crossroads in wake of OpenAI Navier-Stokes proof. It includes this choice quote:

“I think what people are getting upset about is they’re slowly realizing that they are dumb and somehow blaming this on AI, even though it’s not really AI’s fault.”
Holy crap! Japan's Kaguya orbiter earlier found a hole on the surface of the moon. The JAXA used ultrasound on the "crater" and found that it leads to a vast underground tunnel roughly 100 m wide and 50 km in length. There may be ice or water inside. Only now, we are discovering this.

Where have the International Math Olympiad Gold Medallists Ended Up? Good question. The answers are here: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3.
Choice quote from the articles: "I imagine there simply aren’t enough PhD positions available at MIT each year so the students are forced to go to no-name schools like Stanford and Berkeley." <insert Chris Pratt face here, too>
Bemotrizinol-based sunscreens are now on sale in the U.S. So we don't have to get Japanese, Korean or European sunscreens. I still like the Japanese and Korean sunscreens. But having more choices is great.

From the American Council on Science and Health: There's no magic diet: The unpopular truth about nutrition. Good to know, sorta. Avoid processed foods and high glycemic index foods. Eat just enough to eliminate feeling hungry and don't overeat. Simple is better.

SynthID remover. It's called SynthClear and it removes the watermark that makes it a dead giveaway that you used AI to create that deepfake. You know whose Washington County chair campaign could have used SynthClear? Yeah, I was thinking the same thing.

Moderna, Merck Shares Fall After Possible Melanoma Data Leak. Huh? It wasn't bad data. Some people had apparently expected better results, since earlier data seems to indicate greater efficacy. Maybe people were just going to sell on the news anyway (ESMO presentation this Saturday) and well, this is the news, so sell. I still would not get a vax from Moderna. It's a trust issue. Especially when there are alternatives.

Why you never stop being nervous before a big presentation. Reframing nervousness to excitement is the way to go. I stopped being nervous before I presentation when I convinced myself that I had something really interesting or useful to tell people about and could hardly wait to share it. I began to look forward to giving the talk. Harnessing nervousness instead of suppressing it is the best strategy.

A Lost Schrödinger Manuscript Reveals a Surprising Twist in Quantum Physics. Seems that Schrödinger himself was in doubt that his theoretical eponymous cat was a realistic thought experiment. That's probably why he didn't publish it. Everyone already liked that image. Don't take it away from physics!

Oregon Elevation Tools maps certain property-associated information regarding the state of Oregon. Aerial images load pretty quickly – I'm impressed.

What a deal. Mark Zuckerberg convinced Meta to give him tax money so he can stay in California and not be burdened by the billionaire's tax. Instead, Meta customers will pay the tax. How's that for a great deal for Zuck? Are you satisfied, California? This is how billionaires do an end-run against your laws. Regular people are going to pay this tax! 🤣

More Layoffs at PacificSource, as Oregon Health Insurers Continue to Reel—and Costs to the Public Soar. So if the private sector can't make it work, somehow the state government can make it work? The commenters clearly know nothing about healthcare economics, if they think that doctors' pay should be cut to make things work. Who's going to keep the plates spinning when the nurses go on strike?
Smaller rural hospitals are now joining forces to see if they can use economies of scale to help their finances. Kinda like small colleges in Oregon merging to save money. Gotta do what you can to stay afloat.
