Zoozve lives!  This is a funny story of how a guy saw "ZOOZVE" as a satellite orbiting Venus on his child's solar system poster. He posted his puzzlement on X/Twitter here. (If you can't get Twitter, here's the thread.) Well, thanks to him, ZOOZVE is now for real.

Yup, Seattle efforts to boost the minimum wage of food delivery drivers ended up destroying their business. As they say, the real minimum wage is ZERO.

Metabolized SARS-CoV2 proteins can reassemble and interact with your immune system, causing proinflammatory responses. Tell me again, why we need so many boosters against a virus that is like a common cold now.

Watch out for "indefinite optimism". It's why so many brilliant people are losers. It may not be a special talent that all that young multi-millionaires have. They may just be blindly naïve. Too optimistic to see the reality of their ideas that almost everyone can see. Once in a while, they succeed, but most of the time, they don't.

While in the short-term, cannabis might mellow you out, in the long term, it causes increases risk of anxiety. Just what the millennials need – more anxiety. And just what our country needs – more people with mental illness. No wonder Reddit is full of neurotic posters.

Bluesky is now open to the public. This is where things will start to deteriorate.  But as X/Twitter becomes more difficult to access through Nitter, more people may be compelled to migrate to this. Sorry, but Mastodon, Discord and Lemmy are suitable. Those sites are either too cumbersome to use, and are mostly populated by gamers and "neurodivergents".

Academics vs the Normals. Excellent essay. I never thought it would be an encomium of Trump, but it sums up well what will be the Trump 2.0 administration, and why the Dems fear this. As one commenter said "we need a game changing asshole like Trump to change the sad dynamic of this country". Yes we do!

China is building six times more new coal plants than other countries. This is why all the efforts by Western countries to fight CO2 production will ultimately be futile. All it takes is one player not to cooperate, and the endeavor just falls apart. Here's why China will not cooperate – an excellent speech by Konstantin Kisin.

I always wondered why autoimmune disease were so heavily weighted to females. Stanford researchers have uncovered the effect of a special kind of RNA called Xist. It is an lncRNA (long non-coding). Apparently it triggers autoimmune responses by its very presence.

Sacramento Keeps Throwing Money at Its Housing Crisis. It’s Not Getting Any Better. Lessons for Portland, if they'll listen. So how did places like Reno and Minneapolis succeed in dealing with the problem? Maybe they sent one-way bus tickets to Portland and Seattle. Hey, it's not far-fetched. But here's Portland...

£12 billion to be spent on yet another nuclear collider - the largest ever. That's a lot of money. The LHC confirmed the presence of the Higgs boson, but admittedly it didn't change your life. This one hopes to discover the nature of dark matter and dark energy. It's still a LOT of money.

Another one gives up. Lardo is leaving downtown Portland. Yup, too much crime and homelessness. Tax base continues its decline.

––– 良くない –––

When the tax base in Oregon is shrinking, the rest of Oregonians have to get taxed harder.  Now the Dems in Salem want to establish a statewide property tax.  Yet another reason to want to leave Oregon and join Greater Idaho. Danny De Gracia has some wise words about dependency on the property tax.

––– 良くない –––

Thank goodness the Oregon GOP are working on eliminating mail-in ballots, making it illegal for teachers to strike, reversing Measure 110, and making it harder to be subject to the CAT tax.

Oregon is the second highest state in the nation in unepmloyment claims. Only New York was higher. Even states like Mississippi and Alabama did better.

The numnber of homeless increased 8.5% from 2022 to 2023. Yeah, I think I can tell. And there are more illegal immigrants than previously estimated.

Stating the obvious. SAT and ACT score predict academic success in college. Water predicts wetness. This is why diversity advocates want to eliminate standardized testing, so that minorities can enter college. Where they would be set up to fail, if not for special diversity programs. Where they would fail after graduation, if not for diversity hiring programs, such as at United Airlines.

Someone wanted to know what happened to the plastic straw ban. Apparently it just got changed into a more compostable plastic, made of polylactic acid (PLA).  But are those straws really biodegradable? Only under certain "extremely rare" conditions where there are enzymes that can break it down. Otherwise, they aren't really very more green than regular plastic straws.

It is not up to the rich to decide how much they should pay in taxes’. This is Obama thinking, right there. Remember the "If you got a business, you didn't build that" argument? Rich talk from a guy who really didn't build anything himself, but took a lot of credit. The rich got rich mostly because they built something that others wanted, especially what other people with disposable income wanted. Or needed. Someone needs to acquaint Mr. Zucman with the parable of the 10 men in the bar. It helps when you break it down simple.

––– 凄い –––

Avoiding the obvious answer. Why is it so hard to find a job right now despite low unemployment?  Maybe the better question is "How are so many people so unqualified to take a position in our company?" Schools were supposed to help kids become productive members of society. But instead, schools have taught them how to complain. How be dissatisfied with everything. How to be an activist and bring about change. To just make everything equal – for them, so that they feel good about themselves.
And Massachusetts is cutting college degree requirements for 90% of jobs to 'reduce structural barriers that result in inequities in pay and access to employment. Like former Gov Kate Brown, dumbing down requirements to graduate high school because actually learning stuff was a "harmful hurdle for historically marginalized students".

Is this the world's best cancer doctor?  This guy claims to have a 46.3% complete response rate. The Daily Mail claims that he's published his findings in the prestigious "American Society of Clinical Oncology Journal". (Actually the it's the Journal of Clinical Oncology). Naturally I had to check it out. All  that I can see that he's published is an ASCO abstract, and you can get anything published there – it's not peer-reviewed. I can't find any peer-reviewed article published reporting on his treatments. I would like to know how he selects for his treatments, and what the treatment schedules are. How is the clinical trial designed.  But the most intriguing question, how does this guy get insurance approval for all these novel treatments?

Seems to me that the sentiment of Providence in Washington is so different from the sentiment in Oregon. Almost seems like two different operations. Here in Oregon, Providence is viewed as basically benign (unless you are a private medical group). But in Washington, it seems people have no love for Providence. Look here and here and here. Does the Oregon part have a better PR division?

Biogen is discontinuing Aduhelm for Alzheimer's disease, admitting that it isn't working. Lecanimab (Leqembi) is favored instead, but even that drug disturbingly causes brain shrikage. Do we really know what we are doing? Is amyloid-β the right target?

––– 良くない –––

"All kinds of crime are down in Portland". Does it seem that way to you? I agree with commenters – crime is just not reported as much anymore, because people don't feel that it will do anything. But if you look at X/Twitter reports of ongoing incidents, it seems that the city is on fire everywhere, and many folks downtown are stuporous walking zombies, passing out before they can pull the trigger.

Florida has made it easier to sue people who defame you by calling you racist, sexist, homophobic, and transphobic. I'm not sure this is a good idea, actually. The goal is to promote civility, but knowing human natures, I am not certain that this will be the outcome. It will probably lead to even more lawsuits. Because people ultimately want money. Maybe if it were restricted to mainstream media, so that they are forced to report more responsibly. That would be OK.

SCOTUS' Sotomayor is getting tired. The workload is too much. She doesn't have a summer break. Conservative victories traumatize "her stomach and heart". As someone on Reddit said, we don't have a neutral court. We have a polarized court, and one side "fights" against the other side. Judicial activism. It's no longer the rule of law and the Constitution, but rather feelings. We certainly saw that with the vaccine mandate legislation. Sotomayor should step down. She is not the "wise Latina" anymore.

Nice article that shows that the Oregon Democrats' token effort to reform Measure 110 is essentially worthless and will do nothing. And so we have overdoses every day. How not to be a billionaire in Hawaii. The Aloha State is so different now from when I was there before 2000. And I'm not just talking about the new buildings. For a while, it looked like Hawaii was going to have nice things. Now, there are pockets of "Private Property – Stay Out" and everywhere outside of that is just homeless tents, squalor and seediness, amongst the reminders of the faded glory from days past. There aren't as many wealthy Asians to spend money, and the local government has big expenditure dreams. And the unions still rule.
